Week in our shoes

Hey Hollas!

It’s been a week of action and recovery here at HQ, and we’ve shifted into high gear to respond and react to our new political climate. Election Day was over a week ago but its effects still linger, and we’ve been moving forward as best we can with some wonderful partner organizations along for the ride.

Here’s what’s been going on here at HQ:

  • motgraphic1Our Moment of Truth campaign is still up and running, and has stirred up some media attention since being launched. Outlets like Bustle and Lady Clever have cited it as a resource for anyone struggling with election results or the horrific slew of hate crimes sparked by them. We are so grateful to these publications for helping us get the word out about this crucial resource, and we encourage anyone in the States or overseas to submit thoughts, feelings or evidence of any more hate crimes linked to the election results. We think it’s super important to chronicle people’s actions and reactions in this new political climate.
  •  trumpquoteWe’re excited to say that we’ve been promoted on Rage Donate, a platform that chronicles insulting quotes from those in positions of power directed at marginalized groups of people, and uses the anger felt when reading those quotes to fuel donations toward organizations that benefit those marginalized groups being insulted. We think Rage Donate is an awesome platform that features some awesome organizations, and we’re so proud and grateful to be one of them!
  • And last but certainly not least, in response to the recent hate crimes committed and insulting rhetoric being thrown around post-election, our Executive Director Emily May and Deputy Director Debjani Roy will be hosting a Bystander Intervention Training Webinar on n Tuesday, November 22 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST, and Tuesday, November 29 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST. The webinar will equip participants with the tools to respond to harassment while keeping themselves and those around them safe.

Here’s what’s been going on with our sites around the world:

  • Hollaback! Madrid successfully launched their website a few weeks ago, and has since facilitated several promotional activities, including an Instagram photo competition, a #harassmentis Post-It note challenge and a presentation that covered basic forms of harassment and how to combat them. They’ve also reached their goals in terms of Facebook page likes, attendees, stories shared, interested partners and buttons sold. They also recently attended the national End Violence Against Women march with signs, and used the opportunity to promote their Hollaback! chapter and educate the community about street harassment and how to combat it. Awesome work, Madrid!

A massive shout out to everyone here and around the world continuing and spreading Hollaback!’s mission. We know it’s been a tough week and it’ll continue to be a tough road ahead but we’re confident that we’ll be able to make a change with such an amazing team behind us. Take care of yourselves and each other!

Holla and out!

-The Hollaback Team
